Having been cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic and its stringent regulations, the Annual Greenways Golf Day held for the benefit of its members, their guests and other invitees, was re-instated this year.

The tournament was held on the 4th December 2021 but, after much deliberation featured a new name, THE GREENWAYS CLASSIC, as it is no longer an activity run by the Chairman but falls within the scope of the newly elected Golf Committee who handled the event admirably. The floating trophy was, accordingly, renamed and redesigned to suit.

A huge amount of behind-the-scenes work took place from as early as July 2021 and we wish to thank all, no matter how minor the contribution, who were involved in making this one of the most successful golf tournaments that Greenways has hosted.

Players

Despite the weather not doing its share, a total of 80 players braved the conditions in an 18 hole, four ball, better ball, shotgun start competition comprising 3 time-slot groupings to accommodate the number of players. Three judges also availed themselves to verify the scores to ensure that the prizes went to the correct players for which we are most grateful as it eliminated any arguments or disgruntled players at a later stage.

With thanks to our Judges

Fun and Food

As part of the entrance fee, each participant was given a meal voucher covering specially prepared fare by our ‘in house’ restaurant, Via Verdi, which was also on sale to supporters and non-participants on the day.

Caltex Convenience Store offered scrumptious samoosas and pies on sale for the not-so-hungry as well as catering for our Muslim community and participants.

Ken Forrester Wines added some spice by featuring a wine tasting event with a range of wines on sale. Sales certainly exceeded expectation.

To add a bit of fun, a marshmallow driving competition was sponsored on the 9th green by Engel & Völkers. It was won  by Juandré Pitout who drove the mallow 35m to win a R500 meal voucher.

For additional entertainment a mini Putt Putt competition was sponsored by Morné Jurgens. As luck would have it, the winner of the raffle (a box of biltong), Leo Pretorius, also won twice at this event, once even with a hole-in-one.

To round off the day, music was provided by Tristan and his brother who entertained the crowd until late in the afternoon.

And finally the sun set bringing a most enjoyable day to a close ……….

ALL IN ALL IT WAS A GREAT DAY AND WE ARE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR WHERE THE EVENT HAS BEEN SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE ON THE 3RD DECEMBER 2022.
